Taking it to the People

How do you get someone who has never bowled in a league in their entire life to join for the first time?  That question has been rolling around in my head for quite some time.  At the end of my thought process I always arrive at the same conclusion:  you invite them.

Bowling is an attractive sport.  It offers social fun with your friends on a regular basis for an affordable price and it's never rained out.  With that said, why doesn't everyone do it?...

Summer

Oregon State USBC Posted by Oregon State USBC at 06:31 PM on July 10, 2009 Comments comments (1)

I can't believe how fast the summer comes and goes.  Fortunately at this point it's still only the middle of July, but man, it is just flying by.  The Open Tournament came and went, and I feel for my first year, it was a success, but there is so much room for growth.

Some of you may wonder what exactly an association manager does in the summer.  I myself wondered that as well.  So far I find myself doing what I hoped:  seeking sponsorship for next ye...

Bring a Friend

Oregon State USBC Posted by Oregon State USBC at 01:41 PM on April 27, 2009 Comments comments (0)

Five months into my new job and I've made a lot of new friends.  If you've read my past blog posts you'll know that I think bowling is a community of people who are drawn together by the love of a sport.  As I've had the chance to make new friends, I've discovered what others may have already figured out: Growing the sport of bowling really isn't going to happen through the USBC or the bowling centers...it will happen when we the bowlers start inviting our friends to start bowling w...

Good. Better. Best.

Oregon State USBC Posted by Oregon State USBC at 01:47 PM on March 30, 2009 Comments comments (0)

When I took over the position of Association Manager in December, I was a bit overwhelmed.  I felt as though I could understand what Barack Obama was going through as the new president, trying to figure out how to do a job he had never done before.  I felt like I needed to assess the state of our union of bowlers.

What I'm finding, through my communication with bowlers, board members, association managers and everyone in between is that everyone has differen...

A Common Bond

Oregon State USBC Posted by Oregon State USBC at 07:29 PM on February 26, 2009 Comments comments (2)
We're all drawn together by something we love, bowling.  The thrill releasing the perfect ball and just knowing it's going to be there, striking out in the tenth to win the game, or covering any split at all.  These are things we all appreciate.

There is an underlying theme that connects as well.  The feeling of being part of a team, of spending time with your friends every week, of being part of an organization that is bigger than your own score at the end of the da...

Plant the Seeds

When I was hired at the end of November 2008, I told the board that I wanted to see the sport of bowling grow and that I thought I had the ability to facilitate that.  As I get settled in and familiarize myself with the logistical part of being the Association Manger, I don't want to lose site of expectations that I have for myself, beyond the day-to-day operations, for the growth of the sport.

For bowling to grow and flourish, we need more participation, bowlers from every age, fro...

Getting Settled In

Oregon State USBC Posted by Oregon State USBC at 03:05 PM on December 11, 2008 Comments comments (0)
It's been a little over two weeks since I took over as the Association Manager on December 1st.  I've used that time so far to get settled in and try and get a firm grasp on what this position requires to be done successfully.  It's been a bit of a whirlwind thus far, meeting people, trying to keep names, titles, and organizations straight, but I feel like I'm making progress.

I'd like to use this blog as a way of keeping everyone out there who is interested in the goings on of ...
